Denmark,The Kingdom of Denmark, commonly known as Denmark, is a country in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe. Denmark borders both the Baltic and the North Sea. It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea, and these waters are also known as the Danish straits. The mainland is bordered to the south by Germany; Denmark is southwest of Sweden and south of Norway. The Faroe Islands and Greenland are autonomous provinces of Denmark with home rule. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Denmark is a member of NATO and the European Union, having joined the European Economic Community in 1973. Denmark has not joined the Euro zone. Denmark has a state-level government and local governments in 98 municipalities. The Capital and largest city is Copenhagen. The official languages are Danish and English, the total area of the country is 43,094 km², the official currency Danish krone. The estimated GDP according to 2006 survey is $198.5 billion; Per capita income is $37,000, the time zone of the country is CET² (UTC+1). The latitude and longitude extent is 55°43′N and 12°34′E resp. Denmark is divided into five regions and a total of 98 municipalities. The total Denmark’s population constitutes of 91.1% Danish descent and remaining 8.9% from South Asia and the Middle East. Denmark's market economy features very efficient agriculture, up-to-date small-scale and corporate industry, and extensive government welfare measures, above average European living standards.
